I never would have imagined this. No, never in my wildest dreams. Me – driving and overcoming my phobia on the road! What more passing my Class 3 Driving Test on my first attempt!
After a freak accident that paralyzed my confidence on the road, I vowed never to touch any motorized vehicle. For the past 20 years, even sitting at the front passenger seat would grip me with fear whenever the car travelled faster than 70km/hr.
How did I end up driving now?
Not giving up hope, my husband urged me to have my driving lessons at CDC. All thanks to the One Team Instructors that I was assigned to – Mr Teo Hong Khim and Mr Kenneth Tan who made all the difference.
At my very first lesson with Mr Kenneth Tan, he immediately put me at ease behind the wheel. I remember I kept jamming on the brake, causing the car to come to a jolting halt that day. Instead of being angry or annoyed, Kenneth was amazingly reassuring. he then explained things in a simple way that I could grasp straight away. I knew I was in good hands then. His friendly, approachable and calming demeanour helped to allay my fear.
Extremely patient, I knew I could always go to him with my doubts and questions and Kenneth would without fail answer them one by one. He was never frustrated, nor irritated with my endless questioning. Nor would I need to worry that he would think that I am dumb. Every lesson was well-structured and clear. I never walked away from a lesson having to double guess what I had learnt.
Encouraging at all times, he gave me the confidence to know that I can do it. Thank you, Kenneth for making every lesson and enjoyable and stress-free one for me and for having confidence in me!
Mr Teo Hong Khim on the other hand, is an incredibly strict and experienced instructor. Precision is his pursuit. With eyes like an eagle’s, he had no qualms pointing out my mistakes to me. However, his relentless correction was one that I shunned initially. I vividly recall my first lesson with him, how I was reluctant to go onto the main road due to my fear. Wanting only to stay in the circuit (where I was for my past few lessons), he drew me out of my comfort zone to challenge myself to embrace the attitude that I can do it. It was then that I overcame my phobia on the road. Under his vigilant tutelage coupled with a wicked sense of humour, I eventually looked forward to my lessons and improved.
His hand-scribbled notes and sketchy drawings in my handbook were a great help for a slow learner like me. Mr Teo even spent extra time, which meant forgoing his break time, in order to explain things to me. Such was his dedication! At times, when I felt like giving up, he has his ways of encouraging me to carry on. Constantly naggy, he reminded me umpteen times the importance of being an independent, safe and responsible driver and the need to communicated clearly with the other users on the road.
Not only was he teaching me to pass my test, he was imparting a life-long skill to me. This was distinctly evident especially after I got my Driving License. In a mere 3 days, I was confident enough to be driving alone, without some experienced sitting next to me to help me. Five months have passed and till today, I can still hear him stressing, “Look carefully!” when I drive. Thank you Teo, for your effective and invaluable guidance that kept me on my toes at all times! Couldn’t have done it without your persistent nagging 😛 Really appreciate it.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Neo Choon Jin, who was particularly helpful in settling administrative matters for me. Thank you too Mr Neo, for those constructive tips during my warm-up lesson! You certainly calmed my nerves and gave me a final boost before my test.
Once again, thank you Kenneth and Teo for your care and concern and the indelible influence of two great instructors. Both of you compliment each other really well as a team. You are indeed an excellent team together! Thumbs up!
